About Juneteenth 2027

Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day) is a US federal holiday celebrated on June 19th. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, enforcing General Order No. 3 and declaring that all enslaved people were free—more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Black Independence Day, Juneteenth is the longest-running African American holiday. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making it the 11th officially recognized US federal holiday.

In 2027, Juneteenth falls on a Saturday. Across the country, communities celebrate with educational symposiums, parades, street festivals, barbecues, and family reunions.
